CLIENT 1: A West African family in North Minneapolis, Minnesota requested a home refresh for their two bedroom apartment. The family wanted to update their space with a more vibrant color palate and mix of modern prints throughout. The family is unable to paint the walls, change the light fixtures, window treatments or flooring. Keeping house plants alive proved to be too challenging given the minimal light source in the apartment but The Client wanted to have as much greenery as possible to combat the brutal, grey winters of Minnesota. Bringing in as many nature-like elements through faux plants, adding an explosion of color with the furniture and artwork, tying in their West African roots to their new Minneapolis home was all key to accomplish the look they wanted.

The Client’s dining room opened up to the living room space so the design needed to flow and transition smoothly. The Client spends a lot of time cooking in the kitchen from scratch and sitting around the table as a family. Keeping all of this in mind, the new dining room and kitchen design needed to continue to amp up the volume on color and be a place they enjoy spending time together. The chairs and area rug needed to be fun and modern but easy to clean with little ones. Using an indoor/outdoor area rug and hard plastic modern dining room chairs were a great way to achieve a realistic functional space while staying on theme and within the budget.

The only bathroom in the entire apartment was very small and needed more stylish storage options. An over-the-toilet storage shelf can maximize storage in tiny bathrooms where you are unable to replace the vanity or attach shelving to the walls. The cloth baskets not only keep items organized but they double as fun décor. Small decorative canisters help conceal everyday bathroom necessities while continuing to keep things organized. The shower curtain, towels, bathmat, and more faux plants all add color and bring life to an otherwise boring and bland bathroom.

The master bedroom needed to feel like a small retreat. Thankfully the apartment Management company approved one wall to be painted in an accent color. We chose to go with Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black so that the gold deco sun headboard and brightly colored beading and furniture would really pop.
